Banks’ CSR expenditure marks 7.5 times rise in last five years: BB governor: Bangladesh

282 students receive Southeast Bank scholarship in FY 2012-’13

The CSR (Corporate Social Responsibilities) expenditure of all banks has increased 7.5 times in last five years, Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman said Saturday.

He said: All the banks have spent Tk 410 million under CSR activities in 2008 while the amount surged to Tk 3.05 billion in 2012. These banks spent 32 per cent of the total CSR costs for education in 2012.

The BB governor said this while addressing as the chief guest at scholarship giving ceremony to meritorious HSC level students organised by Southeast Bank Ltd in the city.

Southeast Bank Limited Chairman Alamgir Kabir was present as special guest while managing director Sahid Hossain presided over the ceremony.

A total of 282 brilliant but poor students of ten boards in the country got Southeast Bank scholarship in fiscal year 2012-2013. Most of the students are from rural areas, mainly from farmers and workers families. The students will get Tk 4000 at a time and Tk 1500 per month.

Southeast Bank Ltd allocated Tk 20.0 million under CSR activities and out of the amount, Tk 16.7 million came as scholarship under Southeast Bank Foundation Education Scholarship Programme.

The central bank chief said: “We are going to issue circulars within a week on six months maternity leave for women officers in banks and daycare centers at bank branches where number of women staff are high.”

“BB has issued a circular to spend one third of its CSR expenditure of all the banks. More CSR activities will help the banks to improve its performance. BB is scrutinizing the CSR activities for management rating for CAMELS rating calculation of banks,” he said.

Mr Atiur said: “The population growth rate of our country is now1.5 per cent while growth rate of young people is 2.8 per cent. It is positive for the nation as these young people will move forward.” He said there are 50 banks in the country and all the banks come forward to give scholarship for poor and meritorious students. It will create a revolution.

The governor also urged the bank to set up skill development centre with a view to creating skilled people for the country.

Southeast Bank Ltd Chairman Alamgir Kabir said: “The bank has a plan to set up schools, colleges and universities gradually. Recently we are working for a school at Mohammadpur and we will set up another two schools.”

As per the demand of the meritorious guardian and teachers, Mr Kabir said scholarship receivers will get priority to get job in the southeast bank if they complete their study with brilliant result.

He also said the bank will try to increase the number of scholarship gradually. The bank will give 45 laptops to 45 schools in this year.

Southeast Bank Ltd adviser Zakir Ahmed Khan, director Azim Uddin Ahmed and Southeast Bank Foundation project director Ayesha Shireen Rahman also spoke, among others, at the ceremony.
