Brown appreciates BISP prgramme: Pakistan

Federal Minister and Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Madame Farzana Raja during her visit to United States held meeting with former Britain Prime Minister and United Nations’ Special Envoy on Global Education Gordon Brown and discussed matters relating to cooperation on various social sector endeavors especially education.
The meeting was a follow up to the Former Britain Prime Minister’s meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari for discussing promotion of education in Pakistan.
Gordon Brown while appreciating the performance of BISP as a comprehensive social protection programme briefed Madame Farzana Raja about the objectives of UN initiative “Education First” that aims at helping the countries promote education in the context of Accelerated Millennium Development Goals (AMDGs).
He said that BISP’s forthcoming Programme for educating children of BISP beneficiary families could prove phenomenal in promotion of education in Pakistan.
Talking to former Britain Prime Minister, Chairperson BISP also recounted various steps taken by the Government especially through BISP for uplifting the socio-economic wellbeing of the poor in Pakistan.
She said that Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), the flagship Programme of the democratic government was also focusing on the education sector and plans to launch “Waseela-e-Taleem” Program under its umbrella for the promotion of primary education in Pakistan.
Chairperson BISP said that BISP has launched this initiative in a bid to provide basic education to every child according to UN’s MDGs.
She said that more than 3 million non-school going children of beneficiary families registered with BISP will be sent to schools.
She said that under this program BISP would be providing cash transfers while families will agree to send and retain their children in primary schools.
Farzana said that the British assistance for the promotion of primary education would go a long way in addressing the challenges of extremism and militancy and creating a conducive environment to facilitate education in Pakistan.
She appreciated the contribution of Department for International Development in the education sector especially for undertaking various educational projects in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwah and Sindh.
Gordon Brown told the Federal Minister that as UN Special Envoy for Global Education, he would continue his efforts assisting the Government in promotion of education among the masses especially in the far-flung areas of the country
