Indian govt scholarships to heirs of FFs: Bangladesh

Chittagong, Feb 9:

The High Commission (HC) of India today distributed cheques of scholarships of the government of India to the heirs of freedom fighters (FFs) of Chittagong Division.

The government of India awards scholarships to the direct wards of Bangladeshi FFs for Undergraduate and Higher Secondary studies. In the Undergraduatecategory each selected award recipient was given a scholarship of Tk 24,000/- per year for four years till he or she completes graduation and in the higher secondary category each was given a scholarship of Tk 10,000/- per year for two years.

The scholarship scheme started in the year 2006-07. Till date the Indian government has distributed approximately Tk 55 million to 4229 students, organisers said adding that this year the scholarships have been awarded to 1093 students, amounting to Tk 15 million.

A total of 202 students studying at different government and non-government colleges, universities and other academic institutions were awarded the scholarships through a ceremony organised at the city’s Theatre Institute in the afternoon.

Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation M Manjur Alam addressed the function as the chief guest. President of Bangladesh-Bharat Moitree Samity, Chittagong, Professor-Emeritus Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam and Defence Attache of the HC of India spoke at the function as special guests. The function was chaired by Assistant High Commission of India Somnath Ghose.
