Overseas scholarship grant for minorities enhanced in Telangana : India

The grant under the ‘Chief Minister’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme for Minorities’ has been raised from Rs.10 lakh to Rs.20 lakh.

Telangana Government has issued orders for enhancement of scholarship grant for minority students pursuing overseas higher education with retrospective effect since 2015-16.

The amount of grant under the ‘Chief Minister’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme for Minorities’ has been raised from the earlier Rs.10 lakh to Rs.20 lakh, for the benefit of the poor and meritorious students from minority community pursuing higher studies in post-graduate and doctoral courses in foreign universities, according to the orders on Tuesday.

Through an earlier order, the Government had enhanced the amount under ‘Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi’, for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes.

The fee will be payable in two equal instalments, the first upon production of the landing permit or immigration card and the second, upon production of the first semester results. Deputy Chief Minister Mohd. Mahmood Ali who shared the details at a press conference here on Tuesday, also clarified that students from minority communities will be eligible for full reimbursement of the tuition fee for pursuing professional courses, irrespective of the rank they got.

An order was issued in this regard in March, but some institutions were collecting part of the fee from those who got ranks above 10,000.The Government had sanctioned Rs.300 crore for the scholarships and fee reimbursement for 2016-17, of which Rs.166 crore earmarked for professional courses, Minorities Welfare Secretary Syed Omer Jaleel said.
