Free higher education for orphan students in State

The Odisha Government on Tuesday unveiled yet another welfare measure under which it would bear all the expenses of higher education pursued by orphaned students of the State.

Green Passage, the new scheme, received the nod of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The Higher Education Department will implement the programme.

As per the scheme, orphaned students will not be required to pay fees for their education starting from Plus Two classes. Admission, examination, tuition, laboratory fees and even hostel and food charges will be waived.

The scheme will cover students of Government, aided and private colleges as well as universities. The State Government will bear all expenses arising out of the higher education of these students. Naveen said the scheme will go a long way in empowering orphaned children and enable them to scale greater heights in life. “It is a historic welfare measure by the State Government,” he added.

There are about 16,382 orphaned students staying in 272 shelter homes of the State.
