In a bid to make NIT-Trichy on a par with global institutes, the college has begun rolling out online video courses for foreign students.

The college is also on a spree of signing MoUs with several foreign institutions for the development of online courses being offered by it.

A plan to provide quality education to technical students from outside institutions through online medium is also in the pipeline.

B Venkataramani, dean (research and consultancy) of NIT-T said several institutions in foreign countries conduct online courses that are evaluated along with the main courses with credits being separately allocated for them.

“NIT-Trichy has begun rolling out exclusive video lectures that were taken as part of the academic curriculum. All the videos will be available to students through intranet,” he added.

“It is a typical classroom. Everything is recorded and uploaded on the NIT Intranet,” said Venkatramani, showing a video of him teaching for the online medium.

NIT-T director S Sundarajan said professional development and research-oriented courses offered through online will be aiding engineering students.

He said the college had developed exclusive classrooms for video-based courses that are recorded and uploaded in the server.

Tony Schmitz from the University of North Carolina signed a MoU with NIT-T on Wednesday to develop online courses.

Schmitz said colleges abroad provide students with an opportunity to opt for such courses. They also help students manage between regular and online courses and allocate credits for online courses.

With plans to introduce more online courses, NIT-T has set up at least five high-end classrooms with facilities such as video cameras and noise reduction equipment for professors to teach in a smooth manner.
