As part of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign, the Government has launched a deposit scheme, Sukanya Samriddhi, for the girl-child.

The scheme aims at addressing gender discrimination across the nation and is the fourth one introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

‘Sukanya Samriddhi’ is a small deposit scheme with an interest rate of 9.1 per cent and can be opened for a girl-child up to the age of 10 years.

The minimum deposit for the scheme is Rs.1,000 and can be extended up to Rs.1.5 lakh per financial year. The account can be opened in any post office by natural guardian of the child. Depositor can withdraw up to 50 per cent of the amount only for education or marriage upon on the girl attaining 18 years of age.

Girls who turned 10 years between December 2013 and December 2014 are also eligible to open the account before March 2015, according to Senior Superintendent of Post Office, Visakhapatnam Divistion K.V.L.N. Murty. Details can be had by visiting the nearest post office in the city.
