 Mysuru :

As part of the ‘Great Britain’ campaign, the British Council has announced a new programme called Generation UK, which aims to bring up to 25,000 UK students to India over the next five years.

The objective of the initiative is to promote India as a destination to gain study and work experience, offer mutually beneficial placements that will give UK young people the chance to develop employability skills and support the internationalisation of Indian companies and academic institutions.

British Council recently launched the India Employability Survey 2014, which provides insights into emerging employability trends that will help universities prepare graduates for opportunities in an increasingly globalised world.

In addition, British Council has introduced the Education UK Alumni Awards 2015 to honour the outstanding achievements made by business professionals, entrepreneurs and community leaders who can demonstrate how their UK education has impacted on their subsequent success.

“Four of the world’s top six Universities are in the UK. A UK degree is valued by employers across the globe and is a springboard for a successful career. But our Universities are rightly known not only for the excellent education they offer but also for their vibrant and stimulating environment,” said Tammy Sandhu, Deputy Head of Mission and Head of UK Trade and Investment at British Deputy High Commission, Chennai.

Addressing a press meet at Fortune JP Palace in city yesterday, she said “the fact that 84% of Indian student visa applicants in 2013 were successful shows clearly that we welcome Indian students in our universities. There is no limit on the number of Indians who can come to study and stay on to work in a graduate level job after their studies.”

Indian students applying for undergraduate courses in the UK continue to grow, owing to a conducive environment they get to study and live. Over 90 per cent of postgraduate students in the UK rate the quality of teaching positively and the satisfaction rate for students has hit a 10-year high — with 86% saying they are satisfied overall with their course, as per National Student Survey (NSS).

A recent British Council research has found that of 195 countries, 1 in 7 current world leaders have studied in the UK at Higher Education level. “We are keen to encourage greater student mobility and exchanges between India and the UK. UK welcomes India’s best talent, to gain internationally recognised qualifications from top-ranking global institutions. For Indian students aspiring to take this opportunity, we have scheduled a seminar in Mysore on Nov. 8 to provide information on studying for an undergraduate, postgraduate or research degree in the UK. The Great UK Education Seminar is a one-stop destination for students to get fully equipped for studying and living in the UK,” said Mei-Kwei Barker, Director South India, British Council.

The seminar is being held today at Fortune JP Palace in city from 2.30 pm onwards.

GREAT Britain Scholarships

The UK and India share a well-established, broad-ranging and expanding partnership on education. With 401 scholarships this year, and over 750 in the last two years, the GREAT Britain Scholarships – India 2015 is the largest ever scholarships programme offered to Indian students. The scholarships are worth almost 1.51 million pounds (approx. 151 million rupees).

The ‘GREAT Britain’ campaign (“GREAT”) is a strategic international marketing programme designed to promote the UK to business, tourism and student markets worldwide in order to enhance the country’s global reputation and deliver long-term economic benefits. GREAT was officially launched in February 2012.
