Of the 23 people selected for a one-year master’s degree, three were present on the occasion. These were Dr Ali Adnan Zaidi who has received the scholarship for a programme in international development, Hina Saeed for film making and Sohail Chaudhry, the Multan district police officer, for criminology. Six of the scholarship recipients are from the Punjab this year.

Saeed told The Express Tribune that she planned to open a production after her studies.

British Council announced that they had received at least 13,000 applications for the scholarship this year.

Punjab Literacy Secretary Allah Bakhsh Malik, a member of the British Alumni Association Pakistan, was the chief guest at the ceremony. The Head of Programmes at British Council, Nishaat Riaz, was also present.

The British Chevening Scholarship, launched in 1984, is among the most prestigious scholarships awarded for a one-year postgraduate degree programme. Each scholar receives £12,000 for tuition fee, a £900 monthly stipend as well as an allowance for travel and other expenses.

The British Council has selected Security and Counter Terrorism, Governance and Democracy, Regional Stability and Conflict Resolution, Media and Communications and Economic Growth as its preferred subjects of study.
