BBAU students can now earn while they learn : India

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh :

In a first, students of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) will have an opportunity to earn money while they study at the university. Under the university’s ‘Earn While You Learn’ scheme, the students will be involved in various clerical and departmental jobs for which they will be paid on hourly basis.

BBAU vice-chancellor Prof RC Sobti said, “Students can also open provision store inside their hostels and make money. They will also be involved in library work for which they will receive some remuneration.”

The objective behind this scheme is to help poor students earn some money. According to Prof Sobti, he frequently receives applications from students seeking fee waiver because they cannot afford the fees. “This scheme will be of great help to students belonging to economically weaker sections,” he said.

Gearing up for the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), BBAU V-C had constituted a committee to enhance non-academic activities. The committee recommended the ‘Earn While You Learn’ scheme which was approved by the VC. The committee is now framing the policies for the scheme. The scheme, said Prof Sobti, will begin by mid September. According to committee members, this scheme is presently running in many foreign universities and some institutions in Madhya Pradesh. In UP, students of Dr Shaakuntala Mishra Rehabilitation University get Rs 100 per hour for different works they are engaged in. Here, students can earn maximum of Rs 2,000 per month.
