Students explore journalism as a career option : India

Madurai, Tamil Nadu :

For more than 80 students from various city schools, it was an informed introduction to the world of journalism at The Hindu’s ‘Young Journalist Meet’ organised as part of the ‘Newspaper in Education’ programme at Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Community Hall here on Tuesday.

The students from classes VII to IX got a chance to interact with journalists from the Madurai Bureau of The Hindu and they were exposed to various aspects of journalism and the functioning of a newspaper.

The students raised a number of questions ranging from the duties of a reporter and a news editor and the qualification to become a journalist.

Asking how news was collected across various centres, S. Swetha, a student from Mahatma School, wanted to know how reporters went about collecting news on varied issues pertaining to education, health, art and sports.

The interactive audience were also enlightened on ethical practices to be followed by a journalist and the emerging role of the new media.

H. Lakshmi said that the interaction helped them break a lot of myths associated with the profession. The chief guest S. Sai Subramanian, an entrepreneur who is also the Editor of the monthly journal of the Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association, spoke on the importance of education in human values.

“While the education that all of you receive is the first step towards achieving excellence, there are more inputs needed to become better individuals. Students should be given knowledge and skills which will sensitise them to the interests of people around,” he said.

“Respect and good conduct are necessary to broaden outlook towards life,” Mr. Sai Subramanian added.

Three students were given prizes for their active participation in the interactive session. S. Sachin Bharathvaj of class IX from Mahatma School (K. K. Nagar), R. Akash of class VII from Good Shepherd Matriculation Higher Secondary School and G. M. Vikas of class VIII from Aurobindo Mira Matriculation Higher Secondary School received prizes from the chief guest.

The venue sponsor for the event was Society for Community Organisation (SOCO) Trust.
