2014 SAJA Journalism Awards

The South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) is accepting entries for the 2014 SAJA Journalism Awards in 11 separate categories, including the Daniel Pearl Award for Outstanding Reporting, for stories on South Asia and/or the South Asian diaspora published in 2013.

The deadline for entering the awards is June 30, 2014.

The winners will be announced at SAJA’s 20th Annual Awards Gala in November in New York City.

There is a $50 entry fees for each category (student category is free), which requires your name, title of your entry, and full permanent URL of your work. Please read the instructions for each award category and to apply, click on the categories.

Note: The countries that we consider as part of “South Asia” are India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, Bhutan and Afghanistan.

Category 1: The Daniel Pearl Award for outstanding reporting about South Asia: All media

Established in honor of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was killed while reporting in Pakistan, this award recognizes outstanding in-depth reporting that exhibits the kind of courage and integrity that Pearl embodied in his work.

Category 2: Outstanding enterprise reporting about South Asia or the worldwide South Asian diaspora: All media

This award recognizes outstanding original reporting — including explanatory and investigative journalism — helping explain a significant and complex subject on any topic. The reporting can be a single article or a series on a specific topic.

Category 3: Outstanding business story about South Asia, or the worldwide South Asians diaspora: All media 

This award recognizes outstanding news, feature or explanatory reporting in business and economics.

Category 4: Outstanding arts and culture reporting about South Asia, or the worldwide South Asians diaspora: All media 

This award recognizes outstanding reporting about arts, culture or lifestyle.

Category 5: Outstanding feature story about South Asia, or the worldwide South Asians diaspora: All media 

This award recognizes outstanding creative writing that covers news, sports, business or entertainment.

Category 6: Outstanding editorial/commentary on South Asia, or the worldwide South Asians diaspora: All media

This award recognizes outstanding opinion columns, commentary, or analysis on topics related to South Asia or the South Asian diaspora. Published works in any medium (text, cartoons or videos) are eligible to enter.

 

Category 7: Outstanding photography about South Asia, or the worldwide South Asians diaspora 

This award recognizes outstanding feature or breaking news photography in black and white or color.

Category 8: Outstanding multimedia story about South Asia, or the worldwide South Asians diaspora (includes video stories, audio slideshows, interactive graphics) 

This award recognizes outstanding multimedia storytelling that uses video, audio slideshows, and interactive graphics.

For journalists of South Asian origin working in North America for any media outlet:

Category 9: Outstanding story on any subject: All media

This award recognizes outstanding reporting on any subject and in any medium. Note: This category is for journalists of South Asian origin working in North America.

Category 10: Outstanding editorial/op-ed/commentary on any subject: All media 

This award recognizes outstanding opinion column, commentary or analysis on any issue. Published works in any medium (text, cartoons or videos) are eligible to enter. Note: This category is for journalists of South Asian origin working in North America.

 

For students of South Asian origin in North America:

Category 11: Outstanding story on any subject by a South Asian student in the US or Canada: All media 

This award recognizes outstanding reporting on any subject by a South Asian student studying in North America. Reporting can be in any field or medium. Note: This category is for students of South Asian origin studying in North America.
