‘Education must for hearing-impaired women’ : India

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh :

Education is essential for hearing impaired women as it is the only means through which they can demand their rights, said advocate AV Ashok Kumar at a programme organized in the city on Sunday to raise awareness about the rights of hearing impaired women.

More than 150 hearing impaired women from various places, including Vizag, Vijayawada and Thanjavur, participated in the programme organized by the Deaf Enable Foundation (DEF) as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.

Several women from rural areas are not even able to communicate in sign language because of the lack of education, he said, adding that parents of hearing-impaired children should ensure that the latter receive education to get their rights and be able to compete in the mainstream.

DEF said that the programme was organised to instill confidence in hearing impaired women and enable them to take on the various challenges that come their way. DEF development coordinator J Phani Bhaskar said that many of the women live in fear within their homes because of lack of awareness and education.
