Huge rush for vocational courses in MU colleges : India

Vocational courses have become the first choice for career-oriented students at degree level. Instead of pursuing three-year regular courses at degree level, most of the students, including girls, are opting for vocational courses. Colleges under Magadh University (MU) located in Patna are flooded with the applications seeking admission to vocational courses. These students feel degree level vocational courses are job-oriented.

College of Commerce, which has been imparting teaching in MBA and MSc in biotechnology at both PG and degree level, has been flooded with applications for various vocational courses. A large number of students have applied for BCA, BBM and Functional English, said college principal P K Verma. According to him, admissions in vocational courses will be made on merit basis.

A N College imparts PG teaching in about 24 subjects but rush is mostly in vocational courses. According to A N College principal Haridwar Singh, students’ response to regular courses has been hardly satisfactory as they are inclined to pursue Honours level courses only in a few subjects. The maximum number of applications has been received so far in the college are vocational courses which include BCA, BBM, MBA, MCA and environmental science and water management courses. The college will consider admission on merit basis, the principal said.

B D College too has a huge rush for vocational courses at degree level. BCA, BBM, functional English, Industrial Micro Biology and BSc in IT are more in demand this year, said college principal B N Ojha, adding admission in these vocational courses is being considered on merit basis following rules and regulations of the UGC.

J D Women’s College has also received a large number of applications for admission to vocational courses. The college is imparting teaching at degree level vocational courses in fashion designing, health and beauty care, journalism and other courses. Girls are more keen to get admitted to vocational courses, said college principal Usha Singh.

Similarly, Arvind Mahila College is also flooded with applications for admission in vocational courses. The college intends to improve infrastructure required for vocational courses. Girls have applied in good numbers for vocational courses, said college principal Asha Singh.

These MU colleges have shortlisted students for admission in vocational courses. The admission process will be completed in the second week of July and classes will be held from the last week of July in most of the colleges.
