Announcement:

Groupe Developpement (now renamed as ‘Acting for Life’ (www.acting-for-life.org),

an international child protection agency, hereby invites applications from social researchers, for an exploratory study on cross border mobility, migration and

trafficking in children between Bangladesh and Burmavulnerabilities of children to abuse exploitation migrants’ camps amongst the Rohingya communities.

Purpose:

While much is reported on migrations of Rohingyas and other refugees from Bangladesh and related insecurities and crisis, there is a lack of focus on how children, adolescents and youth have been impacted by the context. This study is meant to contribute to this lack of information on context of children in the Rohingya camps and assess their  to abuse, violence and exploitation. In particular, this research is to determine the incidence of sexual exploitation of children in migrant communities. Also, this study is also meant to determine the incidence, extent and nature of cross border mobility in children, adolescents andyouth between Bangladesh and Burma and identify vulnerabilities therein.

The study is to review current State policies and political debates towards affected

populations, specifically children, identify and describe NGOs (their roles and

interventions) and support agencies (policies, mandates) whose interventions impact migrant populations, especially children. The study should elicit recommendations from stakeholders and synthesise to suggest to Groupe Developpement/ Acting for Life scope for partnership with NGOs, on interventions towards child protection in

affected communities.

Research Objectives:

I. To map the incidence, extent and nature of cross-border mobility andmigrations in children, adolescents and youth between Bangladesh and

Bangladesh and Burma – to understand push, pull and facilitating factors, to determine vulnerabilities therein. To determine the incidence of trafficking in children and adolescents in such movements.

II. To determine the incidence, extent and nature of abuse, violence and exploitation (especially sexual abuse and exploitation) of children inmigrants’ camps amongst the Rohingya communities in Bangladesh.

III. To identify and study local NGOs and community based organisations and the focus of their interventions for migrant communities and children.

IV. To elicit recommendations from various stakeholders, synthesise therecommendations to propose scope for interventions and partnershipwith local NGOs for Groupe Developpement/ Acting for Life.

Research Methodology

i. Geographically, the research must cover sending, transit and receiving points of migrating children. In Bangladesh, the study may be spread across 3 migrants’/ refugee camps. The researcher would have to establish contacts with local agenciesand facilitators to gain access.

ii. The coverage in Burma may be restricted depending onfeasibility.

iii. The research must include a literature survey (academic research, newspaper clippings, and reports published by INGOs, and NGOs, literature available on internet.), field studies of migrant communities/ camps and ensure participation of children.

iv. Researchers need to know have skills in conducting researchinterviews with children, developing tools to elicit informationfrom children on sensitive issues without causing harm.

 

Timeline:The research must be conducted between 15th June 2011 and 7th September 2011. Thereal time for the study is one month.
