Sri Lanka to recruit 15,000 unemployed graduates for public sector jobs

Jan 19, Colombo:

The Sri Lankan government says that the steps have been taken to call for applications for 15,000 positions in public sector.

Applications will be called from the unemployed graduates in February, says the Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.

Reportedly around 50,000 graduates in Sri Lanka are currently unemployed. A majority of them are liberal arts graduates who do not have job skills to qualify for jobs in private sector.

The Minister has said that the current government was the administration that provided the highest number of employment in the public sector after the independence.

He pointed out that the United National Party government led by Ranil Wickremasinghe had planned to slash the public sector employments from 800,000 to 500,000.

However, some economists and professionals say that the swelling of the public sector is a burden to the economy and highlight the need for a better public service through productivity enhancement.
