‘Project Puthri a step towards women’s development’ : India

Chennai, Tamil Nadu :

Initiative aims to empower girl children

‘Project Puthri’, an initiative to empower underprivileged girls to rise to their full potential was launched in M.O.P Vaishnav College for Women on Thursday. The event included the unveiling of its website by five beneficiaries from Sri Venu Gopal Vidhyalaya Government School.

‘Project Puthri’ is the brainchild of Avatar Human Capital trust, and the academic initiative was launched by Bharathy Bhaskar, senior vice-president of Citibank Chennai. Ms. Bhaskar spoke about the importance of female representation, and the effects it has on the female psyche, as girls growing up are deterred from moving to higher positions in life owing to the fact that visualising women in higher positions itself is difficult. While the number of women in the workforce has increased, the number of women at senior positions remains the same.

Saundarya Rajesh, founder president of AVTAR and Puthri, said women in India are the largest group of untapped resources and the way towards economic development is through girl’s education and women’s empowerment.

She claimed only about 1-2% of government and corporation school students enrol in colleges. Therefore, initiatives like Puthri will enable underprivileged children to work to their potential and chase their dreams.
