46 lakh e-books available for students free of cost : India

In a bid to provide plethora of study and reference materials from across the globe, the Andhra University Engineering College have made a huge collections of around 46.7 lakh e-books available to its students through its e-library.

As many as 8,000 registered users (students) now can access 46,69,110 e-books through the e-library free of cost, which is first of its kind in Andhra Pradesh, claim the college authorities.  The college has procured the books from three global library netwroks- 46,53,256 e-books through World Ebook, 14,354 through Knimbus e-book and another 1,500 Delnet e-book-which can be accessed through 90 computers installed in three labs in the library.

“The initiative will help students access all the required books on engineering, science and social sciences from across the globe and now, this facility has been extended to the students of the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE),” said PS Avadhani, principal of AU College of Engineering. These e-books can be downloaded and copies can be prionted, if needed, all free of cost, he said, adding that training sessions on web resources and media orientation are being organised for students in batches of 60 each.

“The database in the library provides century-old books on science and technology and we also have digitally enhanced editions of scanned books from top universities,” said in-charge librarian J Vijay Kumar. The Andhra University Engineering College has got `22.2 crore in the TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme) phase II, which is more than the phase I. Under the TEQUIP, around 90,000 e-books have been bought. Now, the e-library has extended facility in a much better way for the students.

“We are planning to add 10 lakh more e-books. We have already taken licence for 90 lakh titles,” Avadhani told Express. The e-library which is open from 9 am to 7 pm is used by 8,000 students, including 3,000 from engineering department, about 800 from women’s engineering, 150 teaching, 150 non-teaching and about 100 students from IIPE can also access the facility.
