TechMah”s new mantra – Team that plays together, stays together: India

New Delhi, Nov 27 (PTI):

Inspired by the Indian Premier League (IPL), IT firm Tech Mahindra has embarked on a unique employee engagement programme, where the workforce not only play the cricket matches, but teams are formed and traded like the original tournament.

“This year, we have started with the Pune campus. Eight teams were formed and each team was given a cap of Rs 75,000, with which to buy all its players. The team owners were various team heads,” Tech Mahindra Senior Project Manager Satchidanand Joshi told PTI.

Like the original format, the top players for available for sale albeit at a much lower price of Rs 10,000, while the Class A, B and C players were bought for Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 1,000, respectively, he added.

The Tech Mahindra Premier League (TPL) is an eight team, eight over format cricket tournament and was held in Pune this month.

The TPL 2011 concept saw sponsorship coming from banking major HDFC Bank and construction house Paranjape Schemes (Construction).

“What this did was bring in a greater level of camaraderie as employers could interact with even the top bosses, who were there for the matches,” he said.

Attrition has been one of the major concern for the USD 70 billion software export sector, which goes as high as 20 per cent at times, and even higher in case of BPO firms.

Indian IT firms have been engaging employees in various activities right from adventure sports to Family Days to retain talent and counter the high attrition levels.

Recently, when motor sporting event F1 was held in Noida, many IT firms had given out free tickets to its employees.
NIIT Technologies, for example, had organised a go-karting competition for its employees at its Greater Noida campus with the winners getting tickets for the main race.
In Q2 FY”12 quarter, Tech Mahindra”s attrition stood at about 21 per cent as compared to 25 per cent as of Q4 FY”11.

TPL 2011 was held in Pune, but Tech Mahindra is looking at taking the event to a national level. “We are contemplating if we can have a team from each location instead of just limiting it to a particular location,” Joshi said.

At a time when Tech Mahindra is looking at integrating Mahindra Satyam, such employee engagement initiatives can prove important. “The objectives of TPL is two-fold — to bring about a feeling of camaraderie and team spirit among the TechM associates and to drive positive change for children of the Nanhi Kali programme,” Joshi said.

Nanhi Kali is a joint project run by the K C Mahindra Education Trust and ”Naandi” foundation. Initiated in 1996 by the K C Mahindra Education Trust (KCMET), the project provides primary education to the underprivileged girl child in India.
