>

A firefighter from Concord is currently in a footrace in Nepal, and he’s doing it all to help children.

Here’s the information on Stephen Major, from Team Good For Kids:

November 20 through 26, 2011, Concord resident Stephen Major will be competing in a 7-day expedition length stage race in Nepal.  Major rejoins Team Good For Kids to support its scholarship programs and motivate 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from low-income families to improve their lives and their communities through their artistic and athletic abilities.

RacingThePlanet: Nepal 2011 is Major’s second expedition length stage race. His first was RacingThePlanet: Australia 2010, where he ranked 58th among 200 racers. The 2011 Nepal race is a 7-day foot race, averaging 25 miles daily, with one 47-mile stage.  Racers carry mandatory food quantities, equipment, and clothing, while the race organization provides water, tents, and medical and emergency staff. RacingThePlanet: Nepal has attracted 220 competitors from more than 35 countries.

Stephen Major is a Fire Engineer with the South County Fire Authority in Tracy, CA.  He has competed in 5K and 10K foot races in California in support of various charities, and has also competed in large group cycling events raising money for juvenile diabetes, and cancer research. This year, Major ran in the 100th Bay to Breakers, making it his fifth race.

In August, he completed the 7-day Gore-Tex TransRockies Run in Colorado with fellow Team GFK running mate, Nicholas Wickes, Good For Kids Executive Director.

Major is actively raising funds for Good For Kids during RacingThePlanet:

Nepal Good For Kids Foundation is a not-for-profit based in San Francisco, offering 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from low-income families summer camp programs, 12 week 1-on-1 coaching scholarships, and advisory services to realize their artistic and athletic abilities.  Major believes in Good For Kids premise of empowering children to reach their potential and to achieve their goals by fostering artistic and athletic abilities.

Nepal 2011 race begins Sunday, November 20th and ends Saturday, November 26, 2011.
